I couldn’t watch the Nick Berg beheading, but the Memory Hole has it for those who are still undecided whether Al Qaeda terrorists are animals or not. (They are.)
I watched the video of the beheading of Daniel Pearl in 2002 and still cringe when I think about it. Once was enough. But I disagree with those who say these things shouldn’t be made public. As Andrew Sullivan said yesterday, let the world see just how vile and low Al Qaeda is. Why not show them at their very worst?

Ugh. I cringe just reading the *description* of the video.
One thing that occurred to me though, is that apparently the perpetrators were masked? Seems pretty cowardly, if you are proud enough of such an atrocity as to video it, that you would not have the guts to also reveal your identity.

Pretty obvious to me: They’re in Iraq, which is occupied by US soldiers. If they showed their faces in the video, they could never go outside again.

I’ve seen the video.
I’m not sure why, yet, but I thought about nationalism.
What are they attacking, these terrorists? Are they attacking democracy? Are they assaulting and murdering America by doing this?
The more these kinds of acts come to the surface, and the more the terrorists try to use these tactics, the more I just can’t believe them to be sane or even with a distinct mission.
If you think about it, does hijacking airplanes and beheading people help you gain anything?
I agree with those sentiments that say that terrorists are just part of a cult of insanity.
No cultural relativism here.
They’re nuts.

I think, these terrorists really believe that it’s a fair revenge to behead someone.
They might think, that they haven’t anything to gain from democracy or they believe, that americans plan to supress the country forever, because of the oil or because of religion or whatever…
Wrong thoughts may drive anyone mad…

They’re attacking Jews – Berg was Jewish, and it’s quite probable that the captors knew that.

Jew is bad enough in their eyes, but Jew and American — a recipe for disaster.

They’re really stupid cowards!
Do they really think it’s a fair revenge to behead an innocent person?!
Someone who (maybe) is against the Iraqi war!
I’ve seen the full-length video and it’s horrible!
In what kind’a world are we living in?!
Make love not war!

Totally sick, but toally consistent and predictable. Go read any of the interviews with Bin Laden, and he says without a trace of remorse that if you are not Moslem, your life has virtually no value, and it makes no difference if you lose your life. It is okay for Moselms to seek out and destroy you, as if you are a form of bacteria. (Of course, this is exactly what Hitler said about the Jews.) They have absolutely no compunction about murdering a non-Moselm, no matter how painful to the victim and his/her loved ones.
It’s easy to say, “We have to confront these people and destroy them.” If that’s true, we have made it much, much more difficult with our botched occupation, not to mention the Abu Ghraib scandal. I don’t know if there is any answer except to contain them the best we can. They’re simply too big, too widespread and too shadowy — i.e., identifying exactly who “they” are is often all but impossible.

The humanity can get so brutal. One thing I totally don’t get is those religious people inhumanly kill others in “God’s (Alah’s) name”! What the f*ck!
Just heard that Johnson was beheaded too. So sorry for them. Why can’t the wars and killings stop?! Why can’t people live in peace for just 1 single minute?!
