The Singapore headlines are a bit more intense than usual today:
Singaporeans’ miss the smiles of the late Iranian Siamese twins
Lee Kuan Yew’s son is being groomed to be the next Prime Minister (no surprise there)
The Singapore junior college debate team won great scores
Some mobile customers are unhappy with their phone numbers
Parents should choose primary schools close to their homes
And that’s the way it is here in Singapore, where it sometimes gets so deathly dull that even the little flies on the wall tuck in their wings and go to sleep. I think I’ll go home and watch some paint dry.

The fact is events that always get people or the news networks excited about are usually tragedies like sept 11, Iraq war, sars. We are all sadists in a certain way, don’t you think.

It isn’t a question of desiring sensationalism or news that appeals to sadistic instincts — it’s that there just doesn’t seem to be any news here at all. What there is is sanitized to the point of parody. It’s fine if there’s no murder or robberies, but at least give us some interesting analysis, some unique points of view. We saw this for a few days when the government’s new policy on hiring gays was announced, and now we’re back to the usual “Everything is jim-dandy in Singapore” crap. Eerily reminiscent of Beijing.

Well, if it’s excitement you’re after, how about Indonesia? Or Myanmar? Or Cambodia?
But seriously: the very banality of the Singapore news can, in a certain sense, be considered newsworthy in and of itself. So keep up the good work. 🙂

The news in Singapore is more toward personal interest stories than breaking ones. It depends on what sort of news you want. If you want Ananova style news, there’s plenty. But seriously speaking, nothing big really happens except in the financial area.

Did you notice how fast that story of the paper-cutter slasher disappeared? No follow ups! This government hates any news that doesn’t make people feel all cozy and happy….

Loved this one on last night’s TV Channelnewsasia: “Singaporeans rely on gut feeling and weighing scales to see if they’re fat.”
