If this is a topic of interest, you absolutely must read this great review of three books on how China has dealt with its Moslems in the west. The critic makes some brilliant points about how China deals with troublesome minorities. Even scarier, however, is how the US has abetted this oppression by giving it legitimacy under our “war on terror.”

Indeed a great article, I especially like the last paragraph on how to deal with Xinjiang’s crisis. I am fascinated by how China’s policy towards Xinjiang has evolved after 9/11, since there were already a couple of street bombings in Xinjiang as well as in Beijing before 9/11. It was rather convenient to brand these separatists as “terrorists” after what happened to WTC, and play along with U.S. policies, just like everyone else (except for, of course, French. But then they banned the headscarf in school… crazy). I will be traveling to Xinjiang myself for the first time next month, so I guess I will see first hand how Xinjiang is like under central government’s rule.
