A peculiar hybrid of personal journal, dilettantish punditry, pseudo-philosophy and much more, from an Accidental Expat who has made his way from Hong Kong to Beijing to Taipei and finally back to Beijing for reasons that are still not entirely clear to him…

Tasty, I miss real Chinese food…all we have here are some lousy pizzas, hotdogs and gyros.

You know, I don’t know if this is sacriligious to say on this site, but I much prefer a good crispy skin duck from a hong kong/cantonese restaurant. There was a really nice one in Philadelphia while I was there….. yum. peking duck is just doesn’t taste as nice.

momentarily lost my ability to construct sentences there – take the “is” out of that last sentence….

Laowai, that is heresy. That HK peking duck is just crispy fat and cholesterol. I much prefer the real Beijing-style where they give you plenty of the actual duck and not just skin. Have you been to the Beijing Roast Duck restaurant near Tuan Jie Hu? Sublime. (Forget about Quanjude, which is just a tourist spectacle.)

The last place I went was that little back alley restaurant south of wangfujing (about 20 minute walk south – I forget what it’s called though)
It was the best peking duck I’ve had – but I still prefer crispy skin from hong kong. food is about taste! And if I wanted a something with sauce, a pancake and meat I’ll have a Jingjiangrouse.
Anyway, Peking duck is too dry for me. I like the cantonese style, it’s more moist.
In my defense though, I much prefer northern style dumplings… and can’t beat Shanxi vinegar!
