A peculiar hybrid of personal journal, dilettantish punditry, pseudo-philosophy and much more, from an Accidental Expat who has made his way from Hong Kong to Beijing to Taipei and finally back to Beijing for reasons that are still not entirely clear to him…

Hooray for the police in this instance. It would seem that there are some police here in China that care about their work and improving society.
I guess that just because an official is corrupt, doesn’t necessarily mean that s/he doesn’t care about their country or the people. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen was no saint.
As for the men from Xinjiang..that wasn’t fair – shame on you, Richard. 😛 I do know that when I lived in Hangzhou, there was a little Hui restaurant near the place where I worked and the cooks moonlighted as hired thugs if you wanted someones legs broken. I entertained such a fate for my boss over the few months that I lived there…

I think we’ve all entertained similar fantasies for our bosses (though in my current job I can’t complain – she’s great).

A friend and I discussed the possibility of becoming hired killers to pay the rent, but when we found out how cheap a hit is, we realised we’d have to average at least two killings a month.
And even then we’d have to supplement it with part-time teaching.

it’s nothing about men from xinjiang (or anywhere else).
it’s about getting that ‘monkey on your back’. don’t touch that heroin stuff. it’ll take over your life.

Mm, a smear campaign against Uighur people, echoing Beijing Propaganda. A subtle one, but still obvious enough to those who knows well about the dirty little secret of Beijing butchers (sorry Richard).

short translation of THE SUN article that you never heard from ESWN:
there was a basketball game at this university in shandong. after the game, a fight broke out between the teams (one Uighurs, one Han).
afterwards, more than 20 Uighurs went to a Han dorm looking for the other side and beat up many, including the president of the student association.
afterwards, hundreds of Han went to the Uighur dorm to beat people up.
police were called in to restore calm. some students were arrested. the sports director and the director of the Foreign Language department have been subjected administrative punishment for letting this happen.
so there you have it.
read your social message in there if you wish. for comparison, google the words “campus fight” and you will get 3.8 million hits. if i can get a dollar for writing on each racial/gender orientation/etc campus fight, i’d be a millionaire.
