Where would cable news be without them? But if you aren’t sexy and white (preferably with blond hair) you don’t count for much in the eyes of America’s media. This is a great post, and it speaks volumes about our very selective concern for missing women and children.

Hm, I remember a few years ago, a Black American comedian (sorry I forget his name) did a sketch on the TV show “Dr Katz”, and he said:
“Now, a Black man is the SAFEST man on an airplane. Think about it.
Some terrorists hijack an airplane, and they call the President and tell him: ‘Mr President, we are holding six Black people hostage, and if you don’t meet our demands we will….
….(click)….hello? Hello?……”

Ivan,
Sweet! That’s classic!!
Rich, I can imagine that the press is overly concerned with pretty, white, rich women missing. But this other lady has only been missing for a week so it isn’t quite comparable.
When she’s been missing for two months and there’s no interest, then you can complain 😉

Why? The Aruba story broke within hours of Princess Muffin’s disappearance. It’s still being covered on CNN, 50-odd days later.
Not only do poor people get no coverage, rich people get overkill.

Richard, I really appreciate your picking up this story – Latoyia’s only one of many, but it’s time we called out the media ratings whores and hypocrites for what they are.
I’m not finished with this story yet, by any means. Until Nancy Grace gets something on her show about Latoyia, I’m going to keep pounding.

If that president was a black man, you might expect a different result.

Richard C., let me know if I can do more to help. Nancy Disgrace is an aberration and her pandering (and that of all the cable whores) to horny white men makes me sick.

Raj, I think you areseroiusly wrong. The “runaway bride” was missing only a few days when the media were salivating in unison over her. Black, hisp[anics and other minorities never get the media play of the attractive whites. Another pathetic example was Terri Schiavo; when it was a poor black lady in a parallel situation in Texas no one flinched. And that’s a fact.

And where is Chandra Levy?
By the way it’s not just about race; it’s also about economic class. Impoverished children are just EXPECTED to disappear, the sooner the better – because all good Neo-Calvinist Americans know, poverty is a sign of God’s disfavour. Impoversished children are poor because they didn’t work hard enough…

Well, there USED TO be a time in America when they made very serious efforts to find Blacks who disappeared. And the slavemasters would usually offer rewards too.
Whatever happened to that?

Ivan, you are so smart. Really. That’s a very Republican attitude — if you’re not a millionaire it’s proof of what a slacker you are.

Oh, Ivan, You so Cleeeever.Ivan,Is correct.I think many people still believe that poverty is a result of laziness. It’s not only Neo- Calvinist’s who believe this sorta thing.I have a few first gen Mexican-American friends who believe that ANYONE who works hard in AMERICA can make it.They think that the poor Mexicans are lazy. As Anyone who has ever worked with a Mexican person can tell you, thats BS. I don’t know too many white folks with 3 steady jobs.We are the lazy people.

Richard,
I think Ivan’s last statement was an ounce of sarcasm.
Which would explain why your liberal self didn’t pick up on it. 😛

Princess Xena,
There is a lot of truth to that statement. Immigrants have always been the ones busting their balls to make something of themselves in America.
They are probably the only ones who can tell you what the American dream really is.

Hell, I went missing for 8 days once in Bangkok and I’m white and sexy, yet no one came looking for me (unless you count the scary looking Thai dude with the facial tatoos waving a multi page document he claimed to be a bar tab and the girl from Nana Plaza who said I’d promised to marry her).

This is for Raj—
WHAT? WHAT? WHAT?
EVERY human life is of value. If ANY man, woman, boy or girl is missing for ANY amount of time, it is a TRAGEDY!!! If one of your relatives were missing, I bet you’d be twanging another tune. The media has always been WHITE and always focused on news (and everything else) from a WHITE perspective, so why are we surpirsed?? Any time “the flower of white society” is even perceived (by WHITES) to be in peril, the WHITE world comes a’runnin’ (ask the family of Emmitt Till). There may be legislation on the books that prohibits segregation and provides for integration, but BELIEVE ME, Jim Crow is ALIVE AND WELL in the United States of America!
