A peculiar hybrid of personal journal, dilettantish punditry, pseudo-philosophy and much more, from an Accidental Expat who has made his way from Hong Kong to Beijing to Taipei and finally back to Beijing for reasons that are still not entirely clear to him…

Until good old George came to power I looked up to the west, now I’m looking up to make sure that it’s not about to drop a bomb on me.
Hurray for George, the man who did exactly what America’s enemies have been acusing it of doing for years.

Can we stop making it sound like the States is somehow the dictator of the world? I know we’ve got a lot of influence, but I think it perpetuates the thinking that assumes that other countries don’t matter, don’t have any power and are somehow subservient to us. Which isn’t true. I don’t object to the phrase “idiot of the world” or “man with the least brains and the most nukes” or “monkey man in the whitehouse” but king of the world is insulting to everyone else on god’s green earth

Laowai, that’s what he thinks he is, and, sadly, that’s how a lot of Americans feel. We are the world, the Great Superpower with no competition, the country that can start pre-emptive wars and do as we please. Vile, isn’t it? We had the same status under Bush I and under Clinton, but it was Bush who decided to go down the unilateral path and cause everyone to fear us and hate us. King of the World. Well, in a sense he is, because he does have all the power. And this shows us how terrible it can be when we abandon our usual controls and safeguards and grant the leader all but total total power. God, never again, please.

People hate him because he is Godly.
He restored moral clarity to the White House.
Hm, you know, I literally became nauseous when I wrote that.

“He restored moral clarity to the White House.”
no, he restored a single chain of morality to the white house. There is nothing moral about Bush. He is no better than Tojo and Victoria.
