Now this is an example of creative marketing.
A bar in eastern China has come up with a novel way of attracting clients – they are allowed to beat up the staff. The Rising Sun Anger Release Bar in Nanjing lets customers smash glasses, rant and even hit specially trained workers, state media reported.
The owner, Wu Gong, told China Daily that he was inspired to open the bar by his experiences as a migrant worker. Most of his customers were women working in the service or entertainment industries, he said. The bar employs 20 men who have been given protective gear and physical training to prepare them for the job.
Clients can ask the men to dress as the character they wish to attack.
It’s great that a migrant worker in China can rise up like this and become a business owner. And the fact that he got this story into the mainstream media speaks to his marketing prowess. Whether the idea behind the bar is scary as hell and totally bizarre is another conversation.

Didn’t you once state in the duckpond that there’s no such thing as the “mainstream media”?

False. I stated that the “MSM” as defined by Roger Simon, Michelle Malkin and Charles Johnson is a fallacy – this notion of an organized group of media overlords that intentionally decides to “lean left” is a concoction of right-wing conspiracy theorists. Do your research before making asinine statements. Most newspapers and magazines are part of the mainstream media. That is a matter of fact. But the ‘MSM’ is a different concept entirely, a right-wing fantasy of an “enemy” media that hates Israel and Bush and is devoted to liberal causes.

The original story from China Daily is here:

Its much better than the BBC story!
I think its great that papers like China Daily report this sort of thing – it’s light-hearted but also indicative of how China is changing. There are more and more good stories like this making the paper – I remember one really good one on a plague of starfish (they were eating abalone) – i hope this is a sign that slowly it is moving away from its tedious economic trumpeting into something a bit more readable and believable

Bet there won’t be a problem asking the staff to dress up as Japanese. Hm, I wonder why they chose the name Rising Sun bar….

Eh. In some parts of Russia that’s just called “a friendly get-together.”

I really enjoy Nanjing. I feel like those smaller cities (small in the sense of 6 to 10 million, hehe) in Jiangsu have much more “interesting” night life than here in Shanghai. Anybody ever been out on the town in Yangzhou? ouch!
