Unfortunately, that is literally what it is. China seems to lead the way in pirated drugs, along with India and Russia.

A peculiar hybrid of personal journal, dilettantish punditry, pseudo-philosophy and much more, from an Accidental Expat who has made his way from Hong Kong to Beijing to Taipei and finally back to Beijing for reasons that are still not entirely clear to him…

“In May, 11 people were killed by antibiotics made in Heilongjiang. The manufacturers had mistakenly added diethylene glycol, an industrial toxin, to the ingredients.”
This was actually legitimate (well — “legitimate”) medicine made by a state-owned factory, rather than a fake. We did a story on this at the time – the Daqing #3 Incompetent Pharmaceutical Plant or something. Don’t know if any prosecutions ever came of it.

I never touch viagra (among my various concerns about this is a fear of dying with a very peculiar kind of rigour mortis), but for more serious reasons I avoid any and all Chinese remedies/drugs like the plague.

I particularly recommend the 八荣八耻 link that fsd posted, even though it doesn’t have the music video of the little kids singing the about the Eight Glories and Eight Disgraces (you know – the one that goes, like, “clapsies one, clapsies two, I totally love the motherland now; clapsies three, clapsies four, I had no idea that embezzlement was bad until this propaganda campaign told me; clapsies five, clapsies six; guess I’d better not make like the former vice-mayor of Beijing and spend my weekends ripped to the tits on amphetamines and Viagra bonking dozens of girls brought in from the countryside to stock my villas in suburban Beijing, huh?”)
Or something like that. I may be paraphrasing.

To add to this I remember the story of the fake milk powder that cause the death of some number of infants. This profit at any cost culture is a product from the Godless communist culture revolution that Mao started and is still leaving his foot prints behind. The best punishments for these culprits is to lock them and force them to consume only what they had produced and in the case of the milk powder their only sustenance the ‘milk powder’ and water. See how they die a slow malnourished death that the babies who are unable to utter a word of protest felt like. These counterfeiters immorality knows no bounds and a firing squad dead is to easy. The same goes for their government accomplices.

Don’t think any TPDers cook with lard, but this thread-related story may be of interest:

That’s pretty gross, all right. I stopped eating pork (at least, mostly) after hearing and then seeing firsthand that there are farmers out there who feed their pigs off of their outhouse cesspools.
