Two readers now tell me TPD is blocked, one in SE China, the other in mid-east China. On top of that Danwei reports Livejournal blogs are now banned. F*cking Chinese fire drill.
(Fine here in Beijing, by the way.)

A peculiar hybrid of personal journal, dilettantish punditry, pseudo-philosophy and much more, from an Accidental Expat who has made his way from Hong Kong to Beijing to Taipei and finally back to Beijing for reasons that are still not entirely clear to him…

I know, it’s fine in Beijing. And it just seems to happen arbitrarily in different regions from time to time. I probably wouldn’t have posted it if not for the additional news of the livejournal block.

Blocked here (south of Shanghai), as is Livejournal. LJ’s gone off in the past and come back again a week or so later – as has TPD itself – so let’s hope it’s all just temporary.

Is it PC to say “Chinese fire drill”? I grew up using the term, but it sounds kinda racist now, and Aussies apparently have no idea what it signifies. So when there’s irrational confusion and running around at work, I say “hillbilly fire drill” and then explain the meaning. It’s always OK to pick on hillbillies.

Well, it’s as PC as “Great Firewall of China.” And this site has never been too concerned with PCness. I’ll think about usinf the hillbilly version in the future.

Get yourself a VPN, preferably going out through HK, and blocked websites are not a problem.

All this talk at the national congress about peace and development on CCTV 1 the past two days contrasted with the realities of the ridiculous amount of internet censorship in China and some Chinese torture pictures I just ran into (I was not actively looking for them – they just happened to be in some Google Images search results) makes for a very surreal experience.
Here’s hoping to a TPD-blocked-free-Beijing for the rest of the month!

Jumping on the bandwagon: Harbin’s fine.
Also, I agree with nanheyangrouchuan. In particular, I recommend the service Anonymizer. It gets through all the blocks.

Without going into detail on how the Internet works, can anyone who can’t access this site to try http://hermes.hmdnsgroup.com/? If this one doesn’t show either, likely it’s not purposely blocked but rather caused by some other issues.

You’re blocked according to http://www.greatfirewallofchina.org/test/ but I can access TPD no problem from Dalian, and my ISP seems to block just about everything these days.

Chinese Democracy in action. I wonder how much longer until you’ll be banned in the U.S. of A.
