I guess it could work…

After 14 failed attempts at joining the United Nations using media campaigns and presidential appeals, Taiwan is turning to a local goth-style rock band backed by Ozzy Osbourne in its quest for membership to the world body.

Lisa, it won’t work because China could just veto the membership application (I think).

Taiwan’s applications are to raise awareness about its current situation, as a lot of people aren’t that knowledgeable on it. The use of the rock band is to get ordinary people more on Taiwan’s side to create more pressure on Washington to help it, rather than feel tempted to cave in to Chinese pressure.

If anything Taiwan has hindered its own efforts by just using traditional methods (and not always that well), which doesn’t work because of course few countries have diplomatic relations with it. But something like this that can actually appeal to voters directly has a better chance of generating useful support – especially because it can bypass the usual restrictions.

It’s an unusual method of seeking support, but then again Taiwan is in a very unusual situation.

At the last Ozzfest, I could barely hear the music above all the heated crowd debate over arcane international disputes, from Taiwan/WHO to the Western Sahara to Kosovo.

Slim, do you think there was heated crowd debate over African poverty at the Live Aid concerts while bands were playing?

Maybe Ozzy could bite the head off of Mao and Hu dolls?

Certainly China is much more “satanic” than Ozzy or Black Sabbath.

It’s never fun to have to diagram a joke for the humor- or sarcasm-impaired.

But I would venture that Live Aid types are more inclined to think about the cause at hand than are Ozzy fans. Unless juvenile taste in music translates into youthful energy.

You assume that anyone who is capable of understanding sarcasm would automatically find it amusing.

Unless he’s goth cuz the band 1000 homo DJs covered Sabbaths song ‘Supernaunt’ with Trent Reznor singing (or barking) counts? They be better of using VNV nation. Cool post otherlisa.
