Traveling this week

Finally going to NYC for the first time in years. Posts will be few and far between. I’d suggest an open thread, but without our resident trolls comments have been sparse. If anyone wants to guest blog….

Does anyone know a good paid VPN service?

I arrived in Shanghai yesterday and found that dropbox.com has been blocked. Damn GFW.

I use Witopia but you have to pay; definitely worth it. The free proxies are unreliable and full of ads. If you must go that route there’s Anchor’s Free (I think that’s the name of it?), but it periodically takes control of your browser to force you to sponsor sites.

Thanks, Richard. Yes, a paid VPN service is less likely to be blocked. It looks that the Chinese internet will exist under an apartheid system. People who are willing to pay get one version and people who are not get another. Maybe this is what the government wants. People who can afford a foreign VPN service are immune to the unhealthy side of the Internet. It’s the poor and less educated that the government is worried about.

Anyway a VPN service appears to scale the wall better than a proxy. I am using one at the moment. It’s just as fast as regular connection, and my dropbox is back.

On the topic of censorship, often mentioned on this blog (though not government censorship).

Twain has been dead for a hundred years and we get his autobiography now?! “About half will not have ever been in print before?” WTF?!

Seriously, I’m in shock. Something must have been deeply, deeply wrong with his publishers or his family or American society at large for the past 100 years – or all three.
