Frank Yu, who once wrote the excellent but sadly defunct China Weblog, has written an amusing article about how a little story in the Chna blogosphere evolves into something larger. He uses as his example the recent flurry of attacks over at China Daily in regard to my use of the the scornful name “Peking Duck.” According to the formula in Yu’s article, it’s only a matter of time before CNN is banging on my door for an exclusive interview.

I finally am reading the original Peking Duck / China Daily post, and I think I uncovered a very, very hidden Anti-Semitic comment at the beginning.
Bread baked by a sloppy baker in Peking Duck just isn’t rising enough, going by his signature of having baked a hot-bread-repartee to legitimate Chinese sentiments.
So, the bread that came out was just a hardened and unleavened type that was hard to digest.
Matza. The man is calling you a Matza boy!
It really is an interesting read, though. Full of piss and vinegar.

Gee, you are a veritable Sherlock Holmes! But frankly, I am skeptical: If he was truly making a reference to “Matzoh” (preferred spelling) then he was being very, very subtle. If you read Lau’s article, it doesn’t take long before you realize that Lau is many things, but subtle is not one of them. In fact, he’s about the most unsubtle writer in Singapore. I think he was just saying that I, as “the sloppy baker,” was baking flat, inedible bread, an unsubtle metaphor for my being a terrible blogger.
Guan Kim, are you here? Is Jeremy onto something? If so, does Singapore have an Anti-Defamation League?

hey Richard, keep on trucking. You wouldn’t believe how pissed I was at the China Daily Poster…I was so mad in fact I wrote the article.
I know you’re evil but at least you’re our kind of evil.

Frank Yu

Frank, great article — when will you reopen China Weblog? We’d all like to know about your life in Beijing.

Hi Richard, thanks. Since I work for a big N. American Software company, I have t keep low for now to prove that I can be cool. However, I write the Beijing Byte column in SCMP too. Beijing is great. Its flat, its big, and its dusty….and punk rock seems to be alive and well. Hope the US isn’t driving you crazy yet.
regards,
Frank
