Wonderful logic, Jeremy. I’ve found that in my personal life, doing things that only benefit myself work really, really well in the long run.
Anyone who thinks that American interests are the ony ones that matter, and that this is the attitude that should inform our foreign policy, has absolutely no clue.
So, I guess missk is right: if this is the general attitude, then we’re definitely going to get what we deserve by re-electing George Bush. Yay! Four more years of international hatred! Being hated is so good for our country!

Kevin #1, agree with your point, that America’s caring only about its own interests is a bad thing. In Jeremy’s defense, he didn’t say Americans should think this way, only that they do think this way. And that, unfortunately, is quite true. This fuck-you attitude to the world has been exacerbated by the Republicans’ incessant slamming of the UN, and labeling as “weasels” anyone who has the good sense to refuse to march with America into a never-ending war of endless death and grief. Bush’s macho arrogance may make them feel gleeful in the short-term, but in terms of international relations, it’s a calamity. Why should countries cooperate with us after we insult them and spit on them?

Well, now I have to rescind my first post. According to today’s Electoral-vote.com, Kerry is in the lead again. And, tomorrow a bunch more polls come out, so who knows how it’s going to be.

And, yes, Richard was right. I was pointing out that the US has a historical isolationist policy, and many Americans still act that way. Heck, we’re the country of single language, where most people only speak English.

As for me, I vote for what’s best for me 🙂

Just curious, but what exactly is wrong with Americans simply being concerned about America. The basest definition of citizenry and the Nation would stipulate that the priorities of the Nation should override those of other nations. While psychologically, this is little more than atavistic tribalism no matter how many emotional appeals are attached, it is simply the way the world works. International Socialism challenged this for a while, but even it proved insufficient to bridge the gaps of tribal differences. The only thing that has changed sinced the days of Sumer, is that the tribe has gotten bigger, and for some, identification with the tribe is no longer simply a matter blood. I think it is inherent in man’s basernature that there will always exist a desire to create a distinction between oneself and another, a desire to exclude others if only to create an identity of self.

All of that is tangential to the main discussion at hand though, Bush’s policies may have been aimed at promoting American interests as he sees them, perfectly rational for an American president and indeed should accept a president who did otherwise? However, the reprecussions from these actions may have instead harmed America’s long term interests both internationally and domestically, something which American voters should also be aware of.

It’s great for us to be concerned about America. God knows, I’m more concerned about America than ever before. The issue is that a lot of Americans are concerned only about America, to the point where they can justify or conveniently forget things we do that affect other countries adversely. In other words, they think no one else matters, and if it’s of short-term value to America, then it’s justified.

America isn’t a single language country, for a huge number of people, Spanish is their first language and English is only what they speak in high school. There are also a lot of people who speak garbage, rubbish and C£%P, but not English, and many of these people are in the Republican leadership right now.
