ESWN provides a link to some extraordinary photos of one of the most disenfranchised groups in China. The great thing about these photos is all the hope and optimism these people display, despite their hardships.

“因为没钱，成绩优异也不得不辍学，痛哭之余，女儿不是不理解父亲。”
“Due to lack of funding, even with good grades, the daughter is forced to withdraw from school…”
Sad.

If they don’t have the hope of a better tomorrow, what do they have left?
What is sad is that many migrant workers consider themselves to be fortunate because they have escaped a life that would otherwise be spent working on the land.

The prosperity of China’s emerging middle class is built on the backs of the exploited peasantry and migrant workers. No wonder its so “easy” to make a quick buck in China when you don’t have to pay the workers for the fruits of their labour. The whole economy operates like a pyramid scheme, with groups skimming off a cut for themselves at every level. China’s pool of exploitable peasantry at the bottom of the pyramid is so vast that the bargaining power of the migrant workers is unlikely to get any better in the future.

Hate to say it, but I agree completely. I do believe also, however, that most are better off than they were back in the 70s (let alone the late 50s). No easy answer I’m afraid.
