I’ve been searching lo these many years for a decent visual metaphor that could in some small way capture the US policy experience in our War on Terror in general, and Iraq in particular. Ah, the miracle of YouTube.

A peculiar hybrid of personal journal, dilettantish punditry, pseudo-philosophy and much more, from an Accidental Expat who has made his way from Hong Kong to Beijing to Taipei and finally back to Beijing for reasons that are still not entirely clear to him…

Whale strandings are common where I grew up, and so long as the whales are still alive, we’ll do whatever we can to get them back in the sea, but if they’re dead… well, that video has got to be one of the stupidest things I ever saw. It’s so incredibly stupid I can’t even call it funny. What kind of idiot would’ve dreamed up that idea? Oh wait, the Iraq war….

The problem with the metaphor is that Iraq didn’t wash up on our shore. What we did was more like blowing up a whale in the middle of the ocean because it might die and wash up on our shore.

No, we went out into the ocean and found the whale, killed it in order to save it, dragged it to our shores and then blew it up because it was starting to stink.
