Smatter, had jellyfish the other night, here in Auckland. Wife got it from one of the Chinese supermarkets here. It’s OK…I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it, but it’s OK.
Nantong eating is good. Heck eating in China is great, really. But in Nantong, my wife’s brother in law generally takes us out to eat. A nice seafood place, lots of booze (naturally) and good fish. Nantong has some nice river snails – I’m a touch wary eating them, given that we’re at the business end of the river, but they’re tasty. And, of course, there’s my mother in law’s cooking. I like these pork meatballs she makes – lion’s head? Can’t remember…but she knows I like them, so does dad in law and much to wife’s chagrin, I get extra helpings 😀
I like Nantong. Seems they’ve really done up the city. Got nice canals through it – you can hire a pedal boat and squeak your way around 🙂 At least, ours was squeaky… But really, seems they’ve cleaned it up, done a bit of refurbishment here and there and it is a nice place. I liked the Buddhist temple nearby – can’t remember the name of the hill it’s on but it was rather interesting.
I like going there. Hopefully I can sell my Triumph sportscar and go there in this year. Trying to get to each set of grandparents every other year – t’was my parents in Penang last year (Malaysia Is My Second Home program…though they got married in Brunei in 1966 so it’s not completely foreign to them).

I think it’s a case of many a true word spoken in jest. I think the idea that you can live in a country for a few years and consider yourself one of the locals is somewhat naive. Ethnic Koreans who have lived in Japan for several generations are still not considered Japanese. Historically this is “normal”, countries like the US where you can get citizenship, pledge allegiance to an ideology and become one of the people are an anomaly. How long would it take someone like myself, a Westerner, to feel personally affected by the 8 Power invasion, or to feel that what Qin Shihuang did helped to mould my personality? We can be friends with Chinese people, we can like or even love China. But we’ve also spent our lives being moulded by our own culture and experience, even if we wanted to you can’t suddenly erase that and replace it with something else. In my own case I have Chinese in-laws, I’m happy enough as long as they accept me as one of their own family. They don’t need to think of me as Chinese.

Speaking of fireworks. Here in NZ we’ve been letting them off for generations. We know they were invented in China, and manufactured there, but we don’t think of them as being any more Chinese than anything else with Made In China printed on it. It’s a bit late for her to be telling us to leave them alone, that horse has well and truly bolted by now.

The reference to that British guy’s execution is creepy, sounds like she’s being deadly serious but trying to cover it with a joke – and not really succeeding.

What’s more, chicken feet are nice.

Having been out of China for 2 years, maybe you can help me. I looked at that post and I too wondered about the intent. Then I went to ChinaDaily (still google searching chinadaily’s site using their google button) and clicked to comment on an article about sexting.

Was redirected to the forum. Now I once or twice ventured over there during the sinocidal years, but I don’t ever remember seeing this much trash.
